Seems almost unnecessary and extra that there’s an introduction to the Scholar’s Ball. But believe it or not, I’ve met a great many first time scholars who wonder about what they actually have to do here. Is the Scholar’s Ball secretly a way to entice scholars over to the pineapple-on-pizza side? Will your performance at this event impact your score? Does the Scholar’s Ball serve as a way for the WSC Team to scout new recruits based on their dance-floor skills? The answers to those questions are: maybe, no and possibly. So what is this event actually all about?
Note: The Scholar’s Ball only occurs at Global Rounds and ToC, there are separate days for each division (except Juniors and Skittles)
Important Terms:
Ball: No the “ball” in Scholar’s Ball does not actually refer to some sort of round object that bounces around the place (though there usually are a couple thrown about during the event). It instead refers to the social dance party event ball. The Scholar’s Ball is in essence a dance party, a time for scholars to celebrate the fact that they’ve completed all the serious academic events. It's one of the more relaxing social events.
Dance Floor: Yes, there is an area of the Scholar’s Ball where scholars reveal their true talents when it comes to strutting their moves. This central area is usually right in front of the elevated platform where the DJ and WSC staff show off their moves (like some sort of extraterrestrial gods).
Drinks and Snacks Area: On the outer fringes of the Scholar’s Ball area, there’s usually a few tables with drinks and snacks on them. Mind you, I recommend packing your own water bottle and snack box if you’re intent on eating during the ball. The drinks are normally soft drinks (hardly any water to speak of) and there’s usually pineapple-related food on offer.
Dress Code: Honestly, there is no “strict” dress code that you need to adhere to for the scholar’s ball. Just some nice clothes with ample room for body movement will be fine: semi-formal button down shirts and trousers for boys, a nice dress for girls. Again, I am no fashion mogul, and as such have no control over what you wear to the scholar’s ball.
So now that we’ve gotten the more modern and slightly more familiar terms of the scholar’s ball defined, let’s get to what actually happens at this event.

So now you know roughly what transpires in the scholar’s ball: a night of dancing, socializing and hating on pineapple pizza (or loving it). Go ahead and click on the button below to know more about the other (slightly more serious) events of the WSC!

Scholar’s Ball Procedure:
- Rest up before you dress up: The Scholar’s Ball almost always occurs on the free day, where there are no other WSC events scheduled to take place. As such, you will probably either be resting in your rooms or going off on tours. Take some time to rest first before you get ready for the ball. Make sure your entire team and even school delegation is going as well.
- Arrive at the ball: When you arrive at the scholar’s ball venue, go ahead and start dancing! You are free to detach from your delegation, mix and mingle with other scholars, and even maybe find some old friends from the WSC!
- Mix and Mingle: The scholar’s ball runs for a good 3 hours (possibly even more!), you’re free to do whatever you wish during this time. Strut a few moves on the dance floor, get a conga line going, maybe even be inducted into the WSC team on their perch!
- Departure: You are technically free to leave the scholar’s ball whenever you wish, just make sure someone from your school or team knows that you’re leaving. Ideally you shouldn’t be leaving until at least 45 minutes have elapsed from your entry.
